Basically, this is a sort of world between worlds. It kind of exists, yet it kind of doesn't. The thing is, this planet is very much alive. It moves around between dimensions; having no real center of gravity to rotate around. As such, it is difficult to come to this world unless you are very lucky; or get called in for a reason.
This world has four main regions separated by terrain; each with its own sort of president, and a capitol city which serves as the President's HQ. The presidents are elected by majority vote in their region, a democratic republic. The four presidents meet multiple times a year to discuss "everyday business", and really to just make sure things run smoothly. Each President is highly respected; and there is usually some sort of celebration if they end up traveling through cities to make speeches, etc. These four regions have their own history, and their existence side by side hasn't always been peaceful. But the region histories are irrelevant here, they shouldn't affect roleplay too much. The only big thing caused by history is the xenophobia that is international. One region, the mountainous one, is quite welcoming to strangers; but the others are usually suspicious of newcomers.
Here is the basic outline of regions, and a little bit about each one.
This is the smallest region in this world, hidden deep within the mountains, yet the most dangerous by far.It consists of a huge, heat-ridden valley that is surrounded by tall, mostly active volcanoes. None of these volcanoes' eruptions can be predicted, but they are usually short-lived. As such, the cities and towns were built for safety against these sudden explosions. But one volcano by the name of Mt. Zalera erupts much less often. However, when is does blow, is usually lasts around a week; spitting clouds of ash hundreds of feet into the air. It hasn't erupted for almost 50 years now, so it could happen anytime; or it may wait another hundred years. Out of 19 volcanoes, only 7 actually release molten rock in lava form.
The capitol of this region is stationed on a plateau which rises far above the past lave flow. It is the safest place in the entire region. There are many smaller cities and town scattered throughout the valley, thriving on the fertile volcanic soil. The base of this valley is blackened and has an occasional stream of clear water, but also magma pools. There are many pristine hot springs, glittering with colors from green to red to blue.... Any color you could name. But these colors are created by bacteria, the only living thing that can survive in these extreme temperatures of 120 to almost 200 degree pools. Many geysers are also present in this area.
The harsh living conditions of these snow-covered mountains has resulted in very sparse population. Small towns with between 40 and 90 people in residence are scattered far from each other. But unlike the plains tribes, these people view each other as equals regardless to their home town. They are united in the efforts to survive. Trade between the settlements is an old tradition, and one that everyone prides himself or herself in. The towns are always willing to help each other should trouble emerge. The capital, Noxis, is the main gathering place. This region's citizens often gather in Noxis for annual ceremonies. The denizens of these mountains are only too willing to lend a hand to people from other regions (Or, in our case, from other worlds). This region has seen no war in its history, because nobody wants to take over this wilderness, or battle on the unstable slopes.
Technology-wise, this region is pretty advanced. They've developed full-proof ways to predict and warn against sudden mountain weather, avalanches, and other disasters. They created ways to help keep houses comfortable, facilitated transportation, etc. But there is one great tragedy that cannot really be resisted. A legend exists in this world, one that originated from these mountains. The stories speak of a great monster that lives deep within these mountains, far away from any settlement. But it has been sighted on many occasions, often wiping towns of the face of the planet. So the stories are true. The beast is known all over this world, and the threat deterres many potential visitors to the mountains. In its wake, disaster spreads.
This grassy region is bordered on all sides by either the forest, or the mountains; even the volcanic region isn't far away from the edge of the mountain border. The result is that these denizens are always suspicious and unwelcoming to strangers. Warfare in the history of the world; most of the greatest battles took place on the lands of this region. As such, there are many historical landmarks. Very few trees exists here, most are near the forest borders. Waist-high grass ripple in a non-stop breeze. Colorful wildflowers appear in masses, particularly in spring.
There is really only one large settlement here, and that's the capital, Feldus. People who don't live there are mostly nomadic, and move around in tribal groups that vary from small to huge. Most tribes are unfriendly to each other, and view smaller ones as inferior. Peaceful trade exists, but even that can sometimes erupt into an internal battle. Each group has a distinct Native American appearance and style of living. Wasting nothing from captured prey, tribal tattoos and paint, special ceremonies, signature trade products, etc.
Making up about 60% of this world's surface, this is by far the largest region. Grassy clearings appear at random intervals. There are area where the trees grow far apart, as well as area where they grow so close together that movement can be difficult. All sorts of creatures make their home here; both carnivorous, omnivorous, and herbivores. The small cities and towns are usually located in clearings; and make the best of the surrounding nature. Tree houses, log houses, and camouflage are popular. The most technologically advanced city is Rhetor, the capital. Rhetor is so artificial, that is looks quite out of place in this region. It is made mostly of of metals and metal alloys. Most of the smaller residential areas have a sort of mayor who answers directly to the region's president. This region strictly enforces its "chain of command".
The northern area of this region has mostly pine trees and other evergreens, as well a marshy landscape. The further south one goes, more oaks and other deciduous trees grow; along with smaller bushes and undergrowth.
Here is the temporary map. Yeah, I know it's horrible; but it'll do. If you can create a better one, send me an image by pm and I'll put it up.
Honestly, there isn't a good one in place just yet, since we really have no "bad guys" yet. As of right now, people are merely being called into this world due to potential trouble. The main problem is that the Monster mentioned in the legends has become more active, a concern for all regions. Along with that, wild beasts have been multiplying and appearing out of nowhere, making it dangerous for anyone to travel. But it seems the Volcanic Region is the one in the most trouble. Nature has become more active; volcanoes erupting more often and many earthquakes. A few of the hot springs have dried up or are running low. Geysers an dsteam vents have either grown small or stopped altogether. In the Mountain Region, there have been massive avalanches and straneg weather patterns. Plains Region has become covered in wild beasts taht attack everything that gets too close; and storms that produce tornados are longer lasting and more common. The Forest Region has had very few problems so far, with only an increase in wild animals. But they are on high alert, expecting some tragety to affect them as well.
Rumor has it that the living planet is upset, due the work of someone or something controlling the legend monster; in an effort to control or even wipe out the world. But this is mere rumor... We'll see what really happens as roleplay progresses. Meanwhile, people from different worlds have suddenly found themselves dragged into this strange place; some by portal, other feel like they fell asleep and are here in a dream state. And still others have just found themselves here after walking through a perfectly normal dorrway, or something. The newcomers shall travel this world in distress; facing danger after danger, terrified denizens of the dimension, and perhaps the beast itself, or its master.
